Analysis of the recycling and utilization of scrap steel

Scrap steel is an important strategic material related to national economy and people's livelihood, and an important resource for the sustainable development of the steel industry. With China's steel production ranking among the top in the world, the recycling and utilization of waste steel is becoming one of the more concerned fields in the 21st century.

Scrap steel is an energy carrying and environmental resource. Compared to using ore to make iron and then steelmaking, direct steelmaking with scrap steel can save 60% of energy, save 40% of water, and greatly reduce emissions of waste gas, wastewater, and slag by 86%, 76%, and 97%, respectively, which is beneficial for clean production and waste reduction. With the tightening of national environmental protection policies, the scale of scrap steel recycling and reuse is generally expanding.

Expanding the utilization of scrap steel resources is an inevitable requirement to break through resource bottlenecks and build a resource-saving and environmentally friendly society. Entering the 21st century, relative scarcity of resources and limited environmental capacity have become the basic characteristics of China's national conditions. The tight supply of resources and the inability of native resources to meet the rapidly growing demand for resources have seriously constrained the sustainable development of China's economy and society. For the steel industry, these issues are particularly prominent due to the relative scarcity of iron ore resources in China.

We believe that with the continuous increase in environmental protection efforts, the establishment of a carbon emission trading system, and the release and implementation of a series of policies by the country on the development of the comprehensive utilization of renewable resources, circular economy, energy conservation and emission reduction, all have created favorable conditions for the development of the scrap steel industry. The next 3 to 5 years may be an upward period for the application of scrap steel, and the scrap steel processing and distribution industry has great potential.

The gap between the supply and demand of scrap steel resources is significant. Only by accelerating the pace of existing scrap steel recycling, improving the scrap steel recycling rate, and vigorously strengthening the development and utilization of scrap steel can we better meet the needs of China's steel industry development.

Identifying the causes of secondary pollution during scrap steel processing and implementing reasonable and effective prevention and control measures can definitely provide high-quality scrap steel resources for steelmaking projects.
